If you have an ailment, you might lose your appetite or find it hard to figure out what foods will make you feel better. Use this guide to help you battle common health problems.

Is your stomach upset? Watermelon, salty chips, ginger ale and ginger tea can help settle a stomach; in fact, ginger can be as effective as prescribed nausea medications. Bananas encourage mucus production from the stomach lining, reducing contact between the stomach lining and acidic triggers. While toast, applesauce and rice are also on the menu, avoid dairy and fried foods.

Have a migraine? Coffee can sometimes help reduce migraine pain. Try foods containing magnesium or calcium, including spinach, soy milk, avocado, sardines and tofu, if you need more relief. However, artificial sweeteners, aged cheese, MSG and chocolate may trigger migraines.

Are you stuffed up? While we usually think of chicken soup as a cold and flu remedy, other soups are just as good. Steam rising from the bowl can help decongest a stuffy nose or throat. So if you prefer hot tomato soup, serve up a bowl.

Are you battling diarrhea? Diarrhea dehydrates the body and robs it of sodium and potassium. Replace lost sodium with a soup or broth, and add good sources of potassium, such as apricots, bananas and potatoes, to your diet. Sports drinks contain both sodium and potassium but choose a low-sugar option. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can act as laxatives and contribute to further dehydration.
