For many, bariatric surgery is the most effective way to lose weight and improve obesity-related conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Here’s what you need to know about long-term bariatric surgery effectiveness.

Surgical weight loss procedures typically work in one of two ways: They reduce stomach size or reroute food from the stomach to the intestines, which allows the body to absorb less of the food. In addition, surgery promotes the production of hormones for satiety (the desire to stop eating). The majority of patients have excellent results that last for the rest of their lives.

The data on bariatric surgery’s effectiveness are clear: According to a JAMA Surgery study, the average person’s body mass index at five years post-bariatric surgery is 12 to 17 points lower than at the time of his or her operation. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery finds that patients can generally expect to maintain weight loss equal to or greater than 50 percent of excess body weight if a physician’s guidelines are followed carefully. Another study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, reports that many people with severe Type 2 diabetes are able to either stop taking insulin and other medications or reduce the doses necessary to manage their condition by the three-year mark following surgery.
